Description
Photograph article dated October 1, 1962 partially reads, "San Fernando Valley has accepted a challenge: Save a life a day. By initiating a common project: Keep the heart-lung machine running - with blood. It began last week when a handful of Red Cross volunteer workers and 32 donors activated a heart surgery bloodmobile at Valley branch headquarters, 14717 Sherman Way, Van Nuys. Prior to the new headquarters, blood for open heart operations was furnished only by donors at Red Cross Regional Center in Los Angeles. Now the Valley is sharing in the caseload of some 800 annual open heart operations by making it easier for Valley residents to donate blood, which is used to operate the heart-lunch machine." Pictured are, blood donor Clarence Barlow, Granada Hills, and Mrs. Ray Mitchell, Encino, Red Cross volunteer.
