Description
Popular Democratic Front presidential candidate Ángel Aníbal Guevara speak at a campaign rally in March 1982. Seated beside Guevara is his running mate Ramiro Ponce Monroy. Many in the crowd are holding banners and posters in support of the candidates. The Popular Democratic Front was an alliance of the Institutional Democratic Party, the Revolutionary Party, and the National Unity Front. On March 8, 1982 he won the presidential election although electoral fraud was claimed by other parties. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt.
