Description
Image of a hand holding four cards with vignettes of four full-length portraits of a fashion model, a bride, a maid, and a man in a suit with a monocle, captioned "Lulu (The Model)," "Juliet (The Bride)," "Euphenia (The Maid)," and "Ralph Cobbe (The Husband)"; a head of a monkey peeks over the cards at top left; the poster advertises the comedy "Three Wives to One Husband" by French author Ernest Grenet-Dancourt and adapted by James F. Milliken.
Probable date based on similar 1885 newspaper advertising promoting the show: "Baldwin Theater. ... Every Evening (Except Sunday.) Saturday Matinee at 2 o'clock. First production of the Great Union-Square Success, Three Wives to One Husband." (San Francisco Chronicle, 8 March 1885, page 7) "H.W.H."--text, artist's initials, signature in stone, lower right. "Francis-Valentine & Co. S.F."--text, bottom right. "Baldwin Theatre"--text, top margin. "Every Evening & Saturday Matinee"--text, bottom margin.
