Description
Group tunneling with shovels through the snow to reach a shed with firewood. "9-16-68: Back view follow up of front view. Tunnel led from house to shed- once a week opened up and wood carried in. From left- Auntie (Clara lawrence) Warren- George Caya (a neighbor), Rilla's Uncle- Ome- overlooked me holding show shoe pole- notice just once, May H. (Ham) (Ba) and Mose H (Ham) who had arranged for Schubert to come to take pictures. It seems Maine folks "Papas" family questioned depth of snow and this was proof time. I think about- 90. Gus Schubert was father of Clarence Schubert Mae Wand's husband. Father came to Port Wine and surrounding towns each summer. All had pictures taken. Had tent. Weekly stock-up-keeping a store to supply the northern Mines area in the latter decades of the 19th century was no easy matter. This photo, by Gustave H. Schubert, who had a studio at Nelson Point, shows the rear of the Port Wine Store with available hands engaged in carrying supplies from the warehouse through the snow tunnel into the store." -Oroville Mercury Register Saturday, February 5, 1983.
