Description
Can label for Mt. Hamilton Brand Sugar Peas, California Packing Corporation, San Francisco, California. The label features an image of Lick Observatory, an iconic symbol of San Jose since it was built on Mount Hamilton in the 1880s. The observatory is owned and operated by the University of California and is one of the most productive research observatories in the world. The California Packing Corporation (later known as Calpak) was formed in 1916 as the result of the merger of the California Fruit Canners Association, the Central California Canneries, Griffen & Skelley, and the J.K. Armsby Company. California Packing Corporation sold its products under a number of proprietary and distributive labels, including their premium brand, Del Monte. In June 1967, the company name was officially changed to the Del Monte Corporation. This label was printed by the Muirson Label Company of San José. Located on Stockton Avenue, Muirson was the only label-printing operation in the Santa Clara Valley from its founding in 1914 until its closure in 1970.
