Description
Several photos relating to the Petaluma Incubator (later Electric Incubator) Company and the early development of Petaluma. Caption on front reads: "Later factory on lower 3rd Street" , note below reads: "This photo shows a portion of what was known as the Church Tract just west of town on Western Avenue. My poultry houses were on the hillside, and it was here that I placed my first shipment of Brown Leghorns (1879) which consisted of 500 fowls. White Leghorns and Barred Plymouth Rocks came later. This hillside is now (1895) covered with residences overlooking the town." Note on back reads: "In 1878 when L. C. Byce came to Petaluma only a few residences were to be seen in the large territory embraced in the above picture. Potatoes was [sic] the principal crop grown by the farmers. There was no poultry here at that time. The thickly settled appearance of all this section is due to the introduction of poultry by Mr. Byce, and shows what a change can be made in a few years." The three photos show: Petaluma Electric Incubator Company at 307 Third Street (lower Main)--View of Church tract--Carload of Petaluma incubators for Australia at 242 Main Street.
