Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes
The Citizens' Councils of America, also known as Citizens' Councils or White Citizens' Councils, was founded in 1954. In direct conflict with civil rights activists, the group's chief goals were to oppose racial integration and support the segregation of public facilities.
Photograph caption dated August 4, 1964 reads, "A woman picketer is carried away on a stretcher by police officers at the height of last night's CORE march on the Greater Los Angeles Citizens Council. The woman, unidentified, was one of 15 demonstrators arrested for 'false imprisonment.'" The article partially reads, "Arrested demonstrators had to be carried away on stretchers. They were booked at City Jail on a 'false imprisonment' section of the state penal code. The charge, a misdemeanor, accuses them of not permitting other persons to leave an area."; See images #00119030 through #00119031 for all photos in this series.
