Image of men at the wheels after the opening of the head water gates for the Los Angeles Aqueduct in present-day Sylmar, California, at the opening ceremony on November 5, 1913.
"Ernie from Hubert"--text, handwritten in pencil on verso. Title devised by cataloger; date supplied by cataloger based on similar images with the same people at the opening ceremony. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Photo Collection identifies the men who opened the gates as Roderick Mackay, chief construction engineer; H. A. Van Norman, Owens Valley division engineer; D. L. Reaburn, Saugus division engineer; A. C. Hansen, Jawbone Division engineer, and Adna R. Chaffee, Jr., U. S. Army
