Description
Photograph of a view of Spring Street and Main Street looking north from Ninth Street, ca.1915. Los Angeles. Streetcars and horse-drawn carriages make their way along the two paved streets that stand to either side of the city block pictured at center. Two other city blocks full of high rise buildings stand to the far left and right, on the other sides of the streets. A two-story Victorian-style boarding house stands in the center foreground, spires extending from its corners. Farther back in the distance, the scaffolding is visible where a new high rise is being built. Advertising signs are affixed to the sides of nearly all of the other buildings.
Legible signs from left to right include: "Newmark's Cabinet / The 8¢ Cigar", "Jose Vila", "Don Remo", "J.W. Hellmann / Hardware Plumbing Goods Refrigerator Water and Gas Pipe", "Bronson Desk Co.", "Lilyan Hoys Building", "Buy it By the Box / Wrigley's Spearmint Pepsin Gum / The Flavor Lasts", "Coca-Cola", "Central Bldg.", "Grand Pacific Hotel", "Owl Cigar 5¢", "Eastern Outfitting Company / Adjoining Pacific Electric Building / Furniture Carpets Draperies / Houses Furnished Complete", "The Great Credit [...]", "Colgan-Henderson Furniture Co.", and "Signs".
