Photograph caption dated August 12, 1987 reads, "Lazaro Arvazu points to the sky, leading members of the Xipe Totec Indian tribe in an ancient ritualistic rain dance. The dry Anaheim Lake provided a backdrop for yesterday's event, which was staged to draw attention to this summer's anticipated water shortage in Southern California. The Southern California Water Committee sponsored the festivities and local farmers, who would be most hurt by a drought, lent their support to the colorful Indian rainmakers, who wore decorative feather headdresses. Through the ages, the Indian medicine man has used special ceremonies to curry favor with the rain gods, protect crops and ensure the survival of the tribe's village."
