Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with exiting San Jose State basketball coach Stuart Inman, apparently leaving for a job with the Converse Rubber Company. Script reads, "Stu Inman, the head basketball coach at San Jose State for the past 6 years, announced his resignation today...I talked to the Spartan coach this afternoon and asked him why he was leaving San Jose State. Inman compiled a 77 and 68 record, while head man of the Spartans, and his teams hold the conference record of winning two straight WCAC Christmas Tournament championships. " Segment 2 (sound): Russian man speaking about benefits of cultural exchange between Soviet Union and America. Script reads, "Alexei Stepunin, First Secretary at the Russian Embassy in Washington, said today that cultural exchanges between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. may be the answer to closer relations between the two world powers. The Soviet diplomat made the statement this morning during a news conference at San Jose State College. Stepunin was in San Jose for the day, with scheduled speaking engagements at State college, Lincoln High School and the Peace Center on the San Jose State campus. Channel 11 news asked the embassy official to comment on the Russian fishing trawlers which have located themselves off the Pacific Coast...We also asked if the relations between our country and his were improving..." Segment 3 (silent): Racecar action at the Laguna Seca racetrack. Includes close-up of winner in his car being congratulated right after his win. A "San Francisco Sports Car Club" flag is placed in his car for the camera. "Nickey" logo on his jumpsuit. Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): Reporter Bob Halladay, in front of the FMC Canning Machinery Division building, reports on the end of the FMC machinists strike and what it means for California tomato growers. Script reads, "Employees of the FMC Corporation returned to work this morning, ending a five-week machinists strike against the huge firm. Bob Halladay has this report. [Halladay reads rest of script] About 1500 members of Local 562 of the International Association of Machinists voted last Friday to accept management's proposals and return to work this morning. Generally speaking, the men seemed happy to be back at their posts, but perhaps the biggest collective sigh of relief came from California tomato growers. Nearly 300 mechanical tomato pickers are scheduled to be in operation for this year's tomato harvest...and most of those machines have yet to be built her at FMC's assembly line. When the Bracero Program was finally ruled dead, tomato growers turned to mechanical harvesting to solve the labor problem. To do this, they switched en masse to a special strain of tomato developed so that all of the fruit ripens at the same time. This gives growers only two or three days in which to harvest their entire crop or watch it rot on the vine. Growers feared a prolonged strike against the FMC Corporation might leave most of California's tomato crop spoiling under summer suns because no machines would be available for the harvest. Those fears were erased today, however, as company spokesmen announced that the mechanical tomato pickers will be delivered well ahead of the harvest time. " Segment 2 (silent): Extended shots of equipment and workers on the floor of FMC's Canning Machinery Division. Presumably some or all of the machines being built are the tomato harvesters discussed in the story. Reel 3: Segment 1 (sound): Richard Nixon interview, where he says he's only focused on '66 right now, and needs to unite the party. Script reads, "Richard Nixon is back on the campaign trail in California, but this time in support of a former campaign aide, Robert Finch, candidate for lieutenant governor. In Monterey County, Nixon was asked by Channel 11's Dennis Rowedder about reports Nixon has ambitions for '68...Nixon, who has recently toured Southeast Asia, was asked about Senator Fulbright's charges that Saigon is a U.S. brothel." Nixon replies that Fulbright's comment is "gratuitous and completely irresponsible..." and he'd gladly contribute to a fund to send Fulbright over to Vietnam to say it to the troops in person. Segment 2 (sound): Interview with Robert Finch, who says he's proud of his relationship with Dick Nixon and proud that he's campaigning for him, but refuses to engage on the 1968 presidential election. Script reads, "Finch, like most of the candidates in the race for lieutenant governor, is involved in reports there is a national power struggle in California politics, with Lloyd Hand being the Johnson candidate, and Thomas Braden the candidate of the Kennedy family...and Finch being the Nixon candidate." 5/9/66 A-C 465; 5/9/66 D 465 100' SOF BLACKMORE; 5/9/66 E-F 465
