Photographic portrait of a Chinese opium smoker on his mat in the Barbary Coast of San Francisco, ca.1910-1920. A man lies in the fetal position, cradling the end of his long opium pipe between his knees as he draws a breath in. His opium kit is set on a tray next to him, over which the stump of his amputated left arm hangs. Clothes hang on the wall in the background.
