Photograph was edited for publication purposes The fires at Lake Sherwood were preceded by fires in the Malibu area that broke out December 26, 1956 and raged throughout the Santa Monica Mountains from Paradise Cove and Escondido Canyon all the way to the Mulholland Highway near Seminole Hot Springs and Malibu Lake. Just days apart, two more fires were started in the Las Flores Canyon area, to the east, and Lake Sherwood, to the west. Photograph caption dated December 29, 1956 reads, "Volunteer fireman lets loose with tremendous kick as he crashes door on house located several hundred yards from water's edge at Lake Sherwood. Fireman in background sprays water on structure as they prepare to enter. This was one of 96 houses saved from blaze which blotted out sun for several hours. All women and children were evacuated from homes, but men stayed behind to help firemen fight for each house."; See images #00114899 and #00114934 through #00114936 for all photos in this series.
