Description
Photo identification provided by Chris T. Higgins, California Division of Mines and Geology. Photograph shows view eastward of the main surface facilities of the Wide Awake Mine, Sulphur Creek Mining District, Colusa County. The building on the left housed the furnace and condensers for processing of the mercury ore. The linear structure running up the slope to a short tower (stack) on the ridge probably houses a pipe that carried poisonous vapors from the furnace building to vent through the stack on the ridge. The building at right center with the tall structure and stacks is the shaft house. It encloses the headframe and hoisting works for the mine shaft. A mine dump is partially visible to the left of the shaft house.
