Description
Photograph of a disheveled adobe house in a neighborhood of larger homes, ca.1890. Several large trees, including a palm, grow in the front of the house. Several signs are posted on the large tree next to the palm. A utility pole on the sidewalk blocks the reading of the name of the street (Ma[in Street]) on a street sign behind it. Larger, two-story houses are visible in the background. Legible signs posted on the tree reads: "Garfield=[...], 6 oz. [...], syrup", "it pays to buy furniture at I.T. Martin, [...] Spring St., [...]", "[...] shot the chutes! was delightful", "McBurnet [...], where are you going? Fun for both young and old". The photograph was originally dated by 1857. However, outdoor photography was very rare in LA in 1857 and less than a handful of outdoor photos are known. In addition, the architecture of the home in the background looks closer to 1890 or 1900.
