In 1947, furniture mogul Walter Edward Overell and his wife Beulah were victims of an unsolved double murder aboard their 47-foot yacht when it exploded in Newport Harbor. According to a Los Angeles Times article dated Aug. 10, 1997, the Overells had been bludgeoned to death before the time-activated dynamite explosion occurred. The Overells' only child, 17-year-old Beulah, and her 21-year-old boyfriend, George "Bud" Gollum, were charged with the murders. Her parents reportedly were quite opposed to the marriage. Photograph article dated October 24, 1947 reads, "The purchase by Estes, San Marino Investment man, was made in his behalf by his 19-year-old son, Edwin Estes, above, Muir College student."
