Description
A circa 1960 photograph showing a stretch of Third Street, which includes the pagoda-style Bing Kong Tong Association building at 910 through 914 Third Street. It was built in 1949. Next door is a fenced vacant lot. Numerous automobiles are parked along the street.
The Bing Kong Tong were a powerful Chinese-American fraternal organization with ties to organized crime and an association with violence against rival tongs in the early 20th century and the Sacramento chapter was associated with narcotics dealing.
The Sacramento city building inspector authorized the construction of this Bing Kong Tong building in March of 1949 and the Bing Kong Tong celebrated the building's completion on December 3 of the same year.
The Sacramento Redevelopment Agency destroyed these buildings during a midcentury "urban renewal" program.
