Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. When this interview of Gerald Northdurft was conducted he was an Assistant Transportation Engineer for Caltrans at the District 11 office in San Diego. He learned about the Loma Prieta earthquake by watching the World Series on television, and volunteered to assist the Bay Area in running Global Positioning Surveys (GPS) for five days after the earthquake. These surveys were done to record the movement of existing monuments.
