Tinted lantern slide featuring an illustration of an African soldier in the King's African Rifles regiment during the First World War. The King's African Rifles was a multi-battalion regiment raised from British colonies in East Africa, and operated from 1902 until the 1960s. Rank and file soldiers were known as Askaris, based on the Arabic word for soldier, whilst commanding officers were usually seconded from British Army regiments. This slide comes from a set on the activities of the King’s African Rifles battalions in Nyasaland. It was originally held by the Church of Scotland, and generated by J.W MacKay.
