Photograph caption dated December 29, 1988 reads, "An unidentified Southern California Gas Co. worker, above, is comforted by a friend after a manhole cover, right, that had been blown into the air by a natural gas explosion grazed the back of his head on its way down, just missing a direct hit. Workers at Eighth and Stanford streets were fixing a gas pipe when the explosion occurred.
