“Mr Stewart, Dr Laws and pupils.” Group portrait of teachers and pupils outside a brick building, with Dr Laws seated in the centre. Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) was appointed to Nyasaland in 1875 where he established the Livingstonia mission. He married Margaret Troup Gray in 1879 and had a daughter¸ Amelia Nyasa, who was born in 1886. He founded the Overtoun Institution in 1891 which helped develop educational and trade skills. He translated a number of religious text and school books into Nyanja and Tonga and wrote an English-Nyanja Dictionary. Dr Laws was an authority on wildlife in Africa and was an accomplished hunter. ❧ Album containing photographs recording a voyage up the Shire River and scenes from the Livingstonia mission.
