Description
Photograph of native wood carving of Virgin Mary, Encarnacion, Mexico, ca.1900. She stands with her hands templed in prayer, her head surrounded by halo rays of light. A decorative crown adorns her head, and several rings can be seen on her fingers. A robe with a floral pattern is draped around her body. At her feet, clouds and the faces of three cherubs can be seen.
"This statue is in a niche above one of the side altars in the parochial church at Encarnacion. This Madonna claims much respect and devotion being lowered once a year from its niche and carried at the head of a procession in the yard around the church. Sometimes the priests get upon their knees and move forward in this humble and penitent way. The people all follow and the procession moves along over the cobblestone pavement regardless of the comfort of knees or the welfare of clothes." -- Professor G. de Arcais.
