Description
Note: "Der Ponnanifluss oben bei Palghat. Im Hintergrund die Vorberge der Nilgiris. Zu einer Zeit, wo man zu Fuss durch den Fluss gehen kann, da es nur wenig Wasser hat. Auf jener Seite sieht man die Ziegelei in Olavakott. (Basler Missionsziegelei.) Heute geraubtes Gut der Besitzer des Landes!." (Begleitbrief von Dengler mit Bildlegenden, in Schachtel C-30.88). Note translation: "The Ponnani River in its upper course near Palghat. In the background the foothills of the Nilagiris. The picture is taken at a time of the year when one can go through the river on foot, since the water level is low. On the other side of the river you can see the tile-works at Olavakott (Basel Mission Tile Works). Nowadays it is held illegally [or: as a result of theft] by the owner of this country [presumably a reference to the confiscation of property etc during the First World War - PJ]." (Accompanying letter from Dengler with the caption, in box C-30.88). Stamped: "Museum der Basler Mission, Basel, Missionsstrasse 21."
