Description
Documented while Connie Samaras was in the South Pole on the behalf of the Antarctica Artists and Writers Program, Day/Night Divide, Polar Plateau (2005) depicts a portion of the Antarctic Plateau (referred to colloquially as the “Polar Plateau”), located in Central Antarctica. Extending over a diameter of approximately one thousand kilometers with an average elevation of three thousand metres, the high elevations of the Antarctic Plateau establish the area as one of the coldest places on planet Earth due to the below freezing temperatures and incessant winds. Even on a microscopic level, there is practically no evidence for a naturally occurring fauna on the Antarctic Plateau. Samaras’ image captures the vastness of the Antarctic Plateau’s uninhabitable environment as there is nothing visible to the viewer aside from the frozen terrain shaped by the plateau’s frigid winds.
