Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989. While U.S. skaters have excelled in solo competition, no pairs team has ever won Olympic gold. Two young skaters who trained in southern California--Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner--were on track to change that: they finished fifth at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics then won the 1979 worlds when reigning champs Irina Rodnina and Aleksandr Zaitsev took a leave of absence. The teams were poised to face off at the 1980 Lake Placid Games, but Gardner's groin injury forced their withdrawal.
