Description
Photograph of 8 views of 7 different southern California Missions, ca.1895-1900. From top right clockwise:
"25. San Diego Mission, from the date palms": Exterior of the Mission San Diego de Alcala. The mission is on the crest of a rise. In the foreground are three palm trees. There is a wooden fence at the foot of the rise. Piles of earth (eroded adobe walls?) are beside the fence. Several workmen are visible.
"44. San Fernando Mission, from the east, founded 1797": Exterior of Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana, California. Front view of cloister looking west. White arches dominate the view. Some of the tiles are no longer covering the wooden roof structure at right.
"110. Old Mission Church, opposite the Plaza": The Plaza Church front exterior taken from the park across the street. A few trees and other foliage is visible in the park. A utility pole and lines are visible in the street separating the church from the plaza. A group of about 8 people are standing in front of the church on the sidewalk. At least 5 horse-drawn carriages are parked in front of the church. A hill and a few dwellings are in the background.
"95. Front view of the ruined San Luis Rey Mission": Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, California. Main front from southeast showing cemetery at right. Stucco has fallen off the walls of the church in numerous places revealing the brick underneath. The bell tower on the corner of the church is closest to the camera. Arches extend to the left.
"San Juan Capistrano Mission, founded 1776, destroyed by earthquake, 1812": Exterior of Mission San Juan Capistrano. Ruins of long rows of arches at left. Ruin of buildings at right.
"250. Santa Barbara Mission. Pierce": General view of the front of Mission Santa Barbara, California, from southeast. A wooden picket fence lines the adjacent road. In the churchyard, stairs lead up to the main entrance. Arches line one of the walkways to part of the mission. Two images of the south front and bell tower of Mission San Gabriel, California. Trees line the dirt road in front.
