Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Mission Santa Margarita through a field of tall grass, ca.1882. The one-story stone building of the mission is pictured along the skyline at center, its left roof appearing as though it were collapsed in some places, while the roof to the right is not apparent at all and appears to be mainly of stones. Doorways are placed at regular intervals along the front in this portion. A field of tall grass fills the foreground. Picture file card credits Elizabeth Murphy as saying in 1894, "The exact date of the building of the mission is unknown, but it was built before the one in San Miguel which was built in 1797 being smaller and less convenient, it was used as a resting place for travelers en route for San Luis Obispo".
