This is a photograph "that was taken at Tsungkow, Kwangtung Province. There were 16 probationers who had finished their schooling and were told to report to the seminary at Vong Tong, Kaying [now Meixien]. In the photo are three teachers and seated Fr. Cody Eckstein [left] and Fr. Dennis Slattery [right]. Also featured is Towser a faithful dog." Born in Wisconsin, Fr. Eckstein came to Maryknoll in 1920 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1925. He was assigned to the Kaying mission in 1926 where he worked with Bishop Francis X. Ford. He served as Pro-Vicar of the Vicariate Apostolic of Kaying and as rector of the Seminary there. In 1940 he was appointed Society Superior of Kaying. His career included twenty-three years of service to the Society as a member of the Development department.
