Description
Photo of Sanctification Presbyterian Church, located in Gardena, shows a large cream-color church with white trim. Four thin columns adorn the main entrance, which displays the name of the church in large Korean letters as well as in English; a tall thin cross sits over it and a square tower is on the left. Several houses are visible on either side. Verso on photograph says that this church started off as First Baptist Church (no year given); in 1963 the name was changed, becoming Gardena Bible Church. It does not list when it acquired its current name of Sanctification Presbyterian Church. Presbyterianism is predominantly a Christian denomination. Some of the principles articulated by John Calvin still remain at the core of its beliefs; among these are the sovereignty of God, the authority of the scripture, justification by grace through faith and the priesthood of all believers. The earliest American Presbyterian churches were established in Virginia, New England, Maryland, and Delaware during the 17th century and were mainly of English origin. Portions of the Presbyterian Church in the United States have been separated from the main body, and some parts have reunited several times. The greatest division occurred in 1861 during the American Civil War. The two branches that were created by that division were reunited in 1983 to form the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which is currently the largest Presbyterian group in this country. In North America, because of past or current doctrinal differences, Presbyterian churches often overlap. Photo dated: March 2007.
