“Schools.” ‘Mr Bernard Mate, who holds the Makerere College Headmasters diploma, is seen here teaching in school’ Interior view of a school classroom with a teacher pointing at a blackboard. Mr Mate went from Chogoria to the Alliance High School, Kikuyu, and in 1941 to Makerere College, Uganda, on a headmaster’s course. In1947 he became Principal of the secondary school at Chogoria. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1928-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established in 1922.
