A man stands next to his automobile in the midst of an oil field. During the 1920s the L.A. area was pumping 1/5 of all the oil pumped in the world. L.A. was also the first city in the world to adopt the automobile, with a ratio of one auto for 2.5 residents when eastern cities had only one auto for more than ten. Gasoline during the 1920s sold for about 10 cents per gallon.
