Description
Originally named Camp Kent (after William Kent), Camp Duncan was located on Redwood Creek in Redwood Canyon near Muir Woods National Monument and used by the Sunday School Athletic League of Marin County, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The name was changed to Camp Duncan in 1942; the church sold most of Camp Duncan to Mary Libra in 1956, who changed the name to Camp Hillwood. Alexander J. “Zan” Stark was a scenic postcard photographer who moved to Mill Valley, California in the mid-1920s. From the early 1930s through the mid-1950s, he produced thousands of “real photo” postcards documenting much of California and part of Nevada. His partner, Lloyd Perkins, was in charge of sales. Their early cards bear the mark “Z/S” and later ones, “Zan”. The Marin County postcards emphasize scenery, particularly on Mt. Tamalpais and in Muir Woods. They also document many of the townships in the area including Sausalito, Mill Valley, Larkspur, San Anselmo, San Rafael, Fairfax, Belvedere, Tiburon, Stinson Beach and Bolinas.
