Description
Photo shows the cornfields looking north from Chinatown. This large parcel of land, known originally as Southern Pacific's Cornfield Yard as well as Chinatown Yard property, is a site that was referred to by many as the Cornfield--a nod to the past, when the parcel produced tons of corn. An irrigation system has been placed on this 32-acre section, which will become a temporary project, transforming this industrial brownfield into a cornfield for one agricultural cycle. Artist Lauren Bon is the creator of the "Not a Cornfield" project. As of 2006, this field located just north of Chinatown and within half a mile from El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, became known as Los Angeles State Historic Park. The City of Los Angeles dedicated it as Cultural Monument #82 for its role as the Southern Pacific's River Station railroad yard. A makeshift tent has been erected on the left side of the field, and several people can be standing underneath it. Photo dated: July 23, 2005.
