Description
The Chinese preacher at Diong Keng and his congregation of Christian converts. The men all stand to the right. The women stand to the left. Two birds in cages are placed in front of the congregation. Two lamps and a clock are also prominently displayed. Written beneath the photograph in its album: "Preacher at Diong Keng, 60 mountain-miles from Ing Hok
his family and some of his Christian converts. Has been 11 years in service
during cholera epidemic of 1904 he cured a member, the man in a white tunic behind him being over. Parish has radius of 10 miles, densely peopled."
The Smiths were a family of Congregational missionaries in China, 1901-1950, primarily in Ing Tai and Foochow [Fuzhou]. Edward Huntington Smith devoted nearly 50 years of his life to running an orphanage, raising funds, and promoting Christian education in Ing Tai, Fukien [Fujian], China. His wife, Grace W. Thomas Smith served as a Kindergarten teacher in the United States and China.
