Redacted Charles Handy speech on guru, Ricardo Semler, reproduced by WorldLink. Handy begins the speech explaining how Semler became disenchanted with his work environment and organization lifestyle as CEO at Semco, and how he began his attack on what he called a “corporate oppression” of time clocks, dress codes, security procedures, etc. Furthermore, Semler began dismantling the unnecessary hierarchy and bureaucracy that characterized his workforce while also centering himself as a questioner and challenger. Within this new scheme, according to Handy, Semler devised six principles of operation, namely, forgetting about the top line, never stopping to function as a start-up, not being a nanny, allowing talent to find its place, making decisions quickly and openly, and partnering promiscuously.
