Description
Armed guerrillas, including a 62-year-old campesino guerrilla talking with a woman, and a child at the local market in Corinto on a Sunday. In the background, civialians, mostly men wearing a hat, walk in front of a slogan painted on the bell tower that reads, "Because we are one people we are invincible." This area in the department of Morazán was a stronghold of the guerrilla movement through the entire civil war (1979-1992). The department of Morazán, where Corinto is located, was one of the poorest and most remote areas in El Salvador and it was the stronghold of the People's Revolutionary Army (ERP), one of the five guerrilla factions of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). By the end of February the entire northern Morazán was in the hands of the FMLN.
