A large crowd of nuns in religious habit, parishioners, and Sandinista officials in military uniform celebrate the arrival of Pope John Paul II at Plaza 19 de Julio in Managua during his visit to Nicaragua in March 1983. Many in the crowd are holding the red-and-black flag of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and the yellow-and-white flag of the Vatican City. Above the crowd there is a large mural of Nicaragua's revolutionary heroes (from left to right): Santos López, Tomás Borge, Francisco Buitrago, and Silvio Mayorga.
