Black-and-white photograph presumably taken in the aftermath of the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. Image was taken in Santa Ana, California. Text on the back of the photograph states: “This is 4th St. between Main and Sycamore”. (A) This is where Rankins Drygoods Store used to be located, but is now occupied by Woolworths. (B) This used to be W.A. Huff’s men’s clothing store, now Hugh Loews. (C) Newcomb’s shoe store (D) This used to be E.B. Smith’s Jewelry store, now Dick [Everts]. The walls all came down here and they sure boarded it up in a hurry”. Letters on the front of the photograph (D.C. B. A, from left to right) are there to help indicate where the buildings were located. (7) The 1933 Long Beach Earthquake Photographs Collection contains 62 black-and-white photographs taken in the aftermath of an earthquake that hit near Long Beach, California in 1933. Images in this collection show damaged buildings including a court house, O.A. Haley's, Jensens Bakery, Whittier school, St. Anthony's Church, W.M.F Lutz Co.,Geo E. Nygaard realtor, Hulburt Drugs,as well as images of cracks in the ground. Most of the images were taken in Santa Ana; Long Beach; and Compton, California.
