He came to the U.S. at age 15 and eventually became a director of both film and stage. After his Broadway directorial debut in 1953, he joined the Actors Studio where he met actress Carroll Baker. They were married from 1955-1969 and had two children. Photograph dated January 11, 1965 shows actress Carroll Baker with her husband Jack Garfein.
