Description
This April 24, 1909, photograph captures activity on the M Street Bridge during the celebration of Sacramento’s fiftieth anniversary. The picture was taken from the west side or West Sacramento side of the bridge, looking east. In the distance, and to the left of the photograph, is the façade of the Sacramento Cracker Company at 1119 Front Street. Just above it is Knapenshue’s airship, which was slated to fly over China Slough during the morning of the twenty-fourth. The day’s events also included a 10-mile run at the Agricultural Park, the celebratory laying of the cornerstone at the city’s new Chamber of Commerce, a water parade on the Sacramento River entitled “A Night in Venice,” and an evening fireworks display. During anniversary activities, Japanese lanterns were hung all throughout the central business district.
