Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the earthquake, Matt Harizal was an Associate Bridge Engineer for Caltrans. In this interview Harizal describe his personal earthquake, inspecting the false work on the Central Avenue Overcrossing, and working at the Cypress Structure. He gives an eyewitness account of Caltrans employee Steve Whipple, Associate Bridge Engineer, who discovered Buck Helm, the last survivor saved from Cypress Structure.
