Photograph caption dated August 7, 1956 reads "Brig. Gen. J. S. Holtoner, commander of Edwards Air Force flight test center in Antelope Valley, pins Air Force top civilian award for exceptional service on William S. Fonda, 31, engineer of 6120 Riverton Ave., North Hollywood. Fonda saved pilot's life in 1954. He braved flames and smashed plastic canopy to rescue flier."
