Description
Photograph of a mission father hiving a swarm of bees at Mission Santa Barbara, 1905. He is wearing his priest vestment and a head mask as protection from the bees. He holds a pole that extends to a tree where the swarm of bees are. A bag is hangs from the raised end of the pole to cover the bees. The tree is located in a garden with much vegetation. The picket fence around the garden is in a state of disrepair. Several of the pickets are missing or broken loose. A box-like hive stands in the middle of the garden. Another box-like hive, with its top removed exposing the trays within, stands in the foreground near the working priest.
