Description
Photograph of soldiers in a trench behind the great entanglement on the French front in World War I, ca.1915. Twelve soldiers are standing in a trench at center and all are looking towards the camera. They are wearing uniforms consisting partially of light-colored jackets and metal helmets. The trench in which they are standing is shoulder-deep and is bordered on the left by a tall mound of dirt and on the right by a wooden ledge on which rifles are resting. A chicken wire fence surrounds the trench at right, and beyond the fence are many wooden posts stuck in the ground, presumably to impede enemy maneuvers.
