Description
Stereo-5144. Shows expedition members, packtrain, horse-drawn triangular cart (surveyor's wheel?), Royal Arches in background. Orange mount, purple back. First Lieutenant George Montgomery Wheeler, Engineer Officer on the staff of the Commanding General of the Army’s Department of California, led early scientific expeditions intended to map the United States west of the 100th meridian. In 1878 and 1879 explorations were made in the Yosemite region by Lieutenant Montgomery Meigs Macomb and J.C. Spiller, topographer, and, photographed by Carleton E. Watkins.
