Photograph caption dated June 11, 1962 reads, "Worker surveys operations control panel and typewriter output stations on the new IBM computer control system at the Standard Oil Company of California fluid catalytic cracker in El Segundo. The system monitors the refinery 24 hours a day, electronically detects any changes, and then quickly provides the operator with the necessary information to take action and improve performance. Computer system is credited with increasing the value of products from the huge plant. The El Segundo process control unit scans at an average rate of 40 points of information per minute from within the cracker. (The computer's ultimate scanning capacity is 20 points per second.) Manual entries of information can also be made into the computer system."
