Description
Annotation translation: "Photo 1533a (Photo Stamm)
18. Dec. 1941. In every chief's court on the Gold Coast you find the office of the Speaker [also known as "linguist", okyeame]. The speaker is something like a public prosecutor and the Secretary of the Chief's judicial court. Cases brought before the Chief's court must be brought initially to him. It is his responsibility, too, to proclaim the court's judgement. Strangers also approach the Chief through the Speaker. He formulates their wishes before the Chief, and formulates, too, the Chief's reply. The Speaker carries out the regular sacrifices to the ancestors. The staff is the symbol of his dignity. It is usually decorated with carving. It is carried in front of him by an attendant who is usually a younger relative. He leans on this staff when he speaks officially. On festive occasions the staff he uses is covered wholly or partly partly with gold leaf. On top there is a carved symbol which is also covered with gold leaf. It usually depicts an animal or a human being, and recalls one of the numerous proverbs used so frequently by Africans. It usually refers to the position or powers of the Speaker. Here we see several such staffs being carried ahead of their Speakers at the consecration of the new church in Akropong in November 1938."
Annotation: "Zu Photo 1533.a (Photo Stamm)
Note: Publiziert (HB 1942, Nr. 1.) (MS 11.1998).
Note translation: Publiziert (HB 1942, No. 1). - The caption to D-30.66.053 (the same image, but not on the disc) reads: "Servants of the various Speakers in Akropong with their symbols of office." - Conflicting documentation: the caption dates the picture to 1937, but the annotation gives the date as November 1938. (MS 11/98).
