Frank Burns arrived in Los Angeles in 1853 from Michigan, becoming involved in the formation of the city. He was, at various times, a school teacher, Los Angeles County Sheriff, police chief and treasurer of the city of Los Angleles, landowner, bounty hunter, and member of the Pioneer Society of Los Angeles. Burns lived a colorful life, hunting down criminals well into his 80s. Burns is credited for his part in preventing the burning of Chinatown during the Chinese Massacre of 1871. He was involved in a scandal in 1892 when he was accused of bigamy by a former girlfriend claiming the two were married. Burns denied ever marrying her.
