Description
Taken in 1921, this unique eaves-view photograph looks southerly, down Ninth Street from the northeast corner of Ninth and J Street. Most prominent is the storefront and sign of the Sterling Electrical Company, owned and operated by William Albert Weigt. The Stanford-educated Weigt opened the store in 1918 with a seven man payroll, performing electrical construction work and selling electrical supplies. Beyond Sterling are the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Temple, an office of Western Union, Heald Business College, Peerless Grill and the Hotel Sutter. In the lower, right-hand corner of the photograph is the steeple of the First Baptist Church, located at the northwestern corner of Ninth and M Streets.
