This is a photograph of Fr. Winkel, who set up the camera and got into the picture at the last moment before it flashed. In the picture are another priest, Sisters Colombiere, Monica Marie and the family of children at the orphanage. Born in Minnesota, Fr. Winkels came to Maryknoll in 1934 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1941. He was first assigned to the mission in Kongmoon, South China. In 1941 he was interned in the Fort Stanley Japanese Internment Camp in Hong Kong for nine months, released in 1942. He made his way to Wuchow and studied Chinese language for eight months and then served in various Kongmoon area parishes. In late 1944 he left Kongmoon because of the war and went to Kunming in western China and served as a chaplain to the army serving there. After the war he was assigned to assist at the Gate of Heaven Leper Asylum in Kongmoon. In 1950 he was expelled from China and went to Hawaii where he served for over thirty years.
